Glass Express Helps You Replace Your Own Glass Window

Did your glass window just shatter and you want to fix it yourself, but you don’t know where to start? Well you have come to the right place. Glass Express Inc. of Indianapolis has created a simple Do-It-Yourself guide to replacing your glass window.

Whenever you are dealing with glass and other sharp objects, safety is always the number one concern. It is important that you wear protect gloves during this process.

The first thing you will want to do is remove the shattered windowpane. Remove each broken piece of glass one piece at a time.

Next you will want to remove the putty. This can be done by using a putty knife or a jackknife. Make sure every trace of the old putty is removed. As you remove all of the putty, you want to also make sure you remove the glazier’s points (the small triangles located in the frame underneath the putty). Also make sure you smooth out any rough spots in that frame that was created from removing the putty.

Once you have removed the old putty, apply a very thin layer of putty around the window frame.

It is now time to install your new glass window.

Your new replacement glass must be the right size for your frame. You will want to firmly insert the new window into the frame.

Next, you will insert a glazier’s point on each side of the window. Additional glazier points should be inserted approximately every 4 inches around the window. Use the tip of your putty knife to push the glazier point into the wooden frame.

Apply a thin layer of putty smoothly around the entire frame. Make sure you cover the glazier points with the putty and also that the putty cannot be seen from the other side.

And now you have it, a newly replaced glass window that you installed all on your own.
