Weathering the Storm

Storm Damage

Spring in Indiana is the time of year when the leaves grow, the birds return, and also when severe storms tend to strike. High winds can cause damage to homes. From falling trees on the property to even compromising the structure of your home.

Types of Damage

If your windows are shattered or damaged from a storm, it is important to replace them quickly so you can protect yourself and your home from outside elements. It is also important for your privacy. Here are some common types of damage to look for when the storm has passed and you can inspect safely.

Heavy Rain leaking into aged windows can cause structural damage over time.  It is important to regularly check your windows. Make sure your windows have a tight seal, and that it is not drafty. Even without stormy weather present, outside air can enter the home. This can increase your utility costs to heat or cool the home.

Physical damage from a fallen tree or flying debris from heavy winds can be quite obvious with shattered glass and shards present or with cracks at the very least.  Both can present issues with excess moisture and unwanted access from the elements into your home.

Hail damage can also be easily visible with cracks or dents.  The extent of damage can vary based on the severity of the storm and the size of hail.  If you are not sure if your home experienced damage from the storm, you might consider contacting an expert for inspection.

Common Cold Weather Window Catastrophes

We’ve been experiencing some down right COLD weather around here lately and it may affected the performance of your old windows, and nothing is worse than a window catastrophes in the winter. Remember a childhood science experiment used to demonstrate how glass expands and contracts due to changes in temperature? An ice frosted drinking glass is filled with boiling water and the result is a cracked and broken glass. When the thermal temperature of glass becomes uneven, it can create stress on the glass just as if someone were applying pressure with their fist and the result is broken glass.

Now we know you didn’t pour hot water down your homes interior window so you might be wondering how did that crack just appear? Chances are you had chip or the beginnings of a crack that you couldn’t make out with the naked eye that was aggravated by the change in temperature. Unfortunately, larger windows are more at risk with the greatest surface area. It’s possible that part of your window receives some sunlight while the other portion is shadowed, perhaps from an overhang. When the wind comes ripping though, the difference in the thermal temperature becomes too much, and the next thing you know you have a broken window.

Similarly, you may have a window that has a floor heat vent without a flow guard blowing heat directly up onto the window. The intense outdoor temperature combines with the furnace working overtime to keep the house warm, equals thermal stress and broken window.

Unlike a window that has had an impact crack, which has a central circular web pattern, a thermal stress crack will run in a diagonal line across your window. Beware of long lines that do not splinter however, that may be a result of not having a good quality tempered safety glass.

Whatever the case, if your home has a window with a new crack due to the extreme temperatures outside, it’s time to call in the professionals. Glass Express is ready to brave the severe outdoor temperatures to ensure you are safe and comfortable everyday in your homes indoors.

Glass Repair for the DIYers’

We would love to repair windows and all of your glass repair needs. And we are good at it. Just check our testimonials. However, we know there are several “Do It Yourself” friends who just want to give it a try. So, for all you DIYs, here is some advice to help you with your next project.

When it comes to glass replacement, there are a few steps you need to take in order to successfully pull it off. Glass repair can go smoothly as long as you know what to do. It only takes some basic tools and a few simple steps and you’ll be on your way.

The first thing you will need to do is measure the window frame in which you need to replace the glass. The piece of glass you purchase needs to be a little bit smaller than the opening of the window in order to make room for the new window glass to fit. You need to measure from one inside edge of the window frame to the other inside edge of the window frame. You will then need to subtract anywhere from 1/16 to 1/18 inch in each direction.

After that you will need to have a piece of double-strength glass cut to the exact dimensions that are necessary in order for the glass to fit in the window frame. When purchasing the glazier’s clips or points you will need enough of them to be able to install one approximately every six inches around the window pane.

The next step is to make sure the glass window is sealed into the window frame. This will involve having to take a cord of compound, rolling it and pressing it into the joint of the frame.

You will then need to take a putty knife and smooth the compound around the joint. Once you have accomplished this step, you will then need to remove any extra compound from each side of the window frame.

Once the compound is dry, paint it to match the window frame.

If you follow these steps, your glass windows should be set. Good luck with your next glass repair project.

Why You Should Consider Investing In Safety Glass

We all know mistakes happen and things break. Take the precaution of insuring your glass fixtures are less likely to break and are less harmful if broken. We offer a wide range of safety glass including; tempered glass, laminated glass, wire glass, fire rated glass and safety mirrors.

Tempered glass most often requires replacing broken glass with a new piece of glass with more strength to meet specifications as well as ensure that the glass is less likely to be broken in the future. Laminated glass has sheets of plastic or other texture on either side of the glass to avoid shattering when impacted. Repair with laminated glass involves taking out the broken glass and replacing it with a laminated pane.

Wire glass repair is more difficult due to the strands of wire within the glass panes. Its often thought that the wire makes the glass stronger, however that’s not the case. The wire is there to increase fire resistance. We also offer safety mirrors. Safety mirrors are commonly installed in places like dance studios, stores, gyms, and other places where mirrors are more likely to be broken.

There are many situations where considering purchasing safety glass may be your best option. Safety glass is a smart investment and insures a greater life span of all your glass fixtures.

Safety glass prevent injury

Although your goal may be to never break your windows or mirrors, it is always better to be prepared with safety glass. Safety glass is designed to prevent glass from breaking or make it safer if it does break. Check out the different ways you can incorporate safety glass into your home.

Tempered Glass

Tempered glass refers to special panes that are tempered or “toughened” in order to withstand additional forces the environment, or your kids, may cause. The process of replacing your glass with tempered glass involves repairing the broken glass with a new piece of glass with equal or greater strength to ensure your it lasts!

Laminated Glass

Laminated glass is what it sounds like, laminated panes that replace the broken glass. Plastic sheets or other textures are placed on each side of the pane to help avoid shattering. Laminated glass is a great option for areas that people may often be in close contact with glass.

Wire Glass

Installing wire glass is a complicated process that helps make the glass more fire resistant, not necessarily stronger. These windows are generally used for fire resistant properties, and our windows meet the fire rating required by code.

Fire Rated

Wire glass is not the only fire resistant glass offered, Fire rated glass repair is also an option. Fire rated glass is often installed for commercial use to meet code requirements.

Dance studio safety back mirrorsSafety Backed Mirrors

Safety backed mirrors are designed to not shatter when impacted. These are often installed in gyms, retail stores and dance studios.

You never think something bad is going to happen, but is always good to be prepared. Whether a big storm comes through or you have a clumsy accident, installing safety windows will decrease your chances of major injury.
